Overview
In “The Ashenda Girl: A Celebration of Girls, Freedom, and Joy,” author Dr. Mearg Tareke (Magi) invites you into the world of Rigat, a young Tigrayan girl living in a Sudanese refugee camp. It’s Ashenda Day, a special Tigrayan holiday celebrating women and girls, and Rigat is excited to join the festivities for the first time. Guided by her older sister Lidya, she discovers the beauty of the day—admiring dresses, dancing to music, and savoring traditional dishes—all while learning the deeper meaning of this joyful celebration.
Inspired by a true story, The Ashenda Girl highlights the vibrant traditions of Tigray and the resilience of girls who find joy in the face of adversity. Perfect for readers ages 5-10, this heartwarming tale is a colorful, uplifting journey into the power of tradition and the spirit of girlhood.
